I agree with your advice of taking it to his tuner. Spending money on a wideband will only tell part of the story and due to the questions asked, the op won't be able to sort it himself. 

 

Fwiw a car will more likely run rough and stall from being lean rather than rich in a fuel related situation. If it gets rich enough to miss then it will quickly foul the plugs and not start or run at all after a while.
