[quote name='xr6t ute' date='Sep 22 2005, 11:27 PM']In my experience, buy the best one you can afford people. Ive got a hand held 5 watt unit and it works well, and if you like you can add an external aerial to increase the range.

[quote name='Lumpen Proletariat' date='Sep 22 2005, 10:06 PM']As a matter of interest, with the big one be possible to rig up an external under-dash kind of set-up cradle with all needed plugs and wire running to it so that it could be swapped easily between cars with just a few click-on and offs?

Or do these need to be hardwired???

Hardwired mate.
That is where the 5watt hand held comes in handy. The in-car is only a 5watt as well. 5watts are the legal limit for amateur users

Those hand held $140 jobbies. Does the price include 1 unit or 2?

Just the one, those that come in packs of 2 are useless half a watt jobs which will start pissing you off about 30 seconds into a cruise.

$330 at the moment, don't go of the Dick Smith prices, they are rip offs.

The Uniden UH-075 5watt sounds good.

How bad is the Uniden UH-044XR 2watt? It would still be more superior to those cheap and nasty ones surely. lol, has the right initials though. :ta:

4 times better than the cheap nasty half a watt ones..

0.5watts x 4 = 2 watts.

Thanks for the maths lesson Ivan :ta:

With the cheaper unit, obviously it's not going to be as strong as the 5 watt'er but how badly does your voice come across? People can still clearly hear you or is it static city, therefore don't bother and get the 5 watt'er?

Your voice will sound fine on the 2watt, will be louder and clearer on the 5watt though.

The problem is range, when you get a km distance you'll loose contact with the rest of the pack. You will still hear transmissions from someone who has a 5watt radio, but they won't be able to hear you.

Mind you, in some of the terrain we've been through, I've lost contact many times even under 500 meters with my 5watt radio and external aerial...
