Any ideas as to what this could be?

When my car is in neutral, I hear this load knocking sound, but when I put into gear the noise goes away. Could this be the dreaded flex plate in my auto, or something more sinister?

When I rev the motor slowly the noise goes away aswell. The noise is a random one and not a constant bang.

If it is the flex plate are they expensive to replace and does anyone know of a good repairer?

Thanks for any help.
