3kw should do a single guy easy unless you have a pool or something. 6.5kw of panels will need significant amount of unobstructed north (ideally) or east west roof space. That's a lot of panels.

It's more planning for the future too, I.e. if the missus were to move in. Plus I have whole house ducted reverse cycle aircon, which chews a bunch of power (high ceilings don't help with that either) when I'm running it when I'm home during the day.

 

@Rab I've been seeing decent 6.5kw setups (I.e. European inverter and Canadian made panels) for between $4-4.5k.

Ah, cheers - definitely worth looking into then.

 

Home-office, computer, massive printer, heating/cooling etc all during the day. $700 power bill on average.

I have a 15kw ducted aircon setup at home. It runs almost all the time during summer and winter. I still get paid by WP/Synergy.

I have 6.08kw worth of panels on my roof. yes it is a north facing roof too, so it has 32 panels on there.

I could fit more panels on that side if I wanted to, but it would be pointless.

 

My parents hardly use any power during the day. they use the power at night and so it was pointless for them to get the setup that they did Dan.

Like I said, read your meter in the morning and at night and this will allow you to calculate how much power you use during the day and at night.

The newer aircons do not chew up that much power if you run them all the time.

Turning them off and on all the time will chew up power for sure.

that's a serious system. Back when I was installing them (7 years ago) the biggest we ever did was 5kw and it cost them over 30k.They have come down so much in price but so has the feed in tariff

ohh I was one of the first ones to install such a big system. At first I got 27 panels and then a couple of years later I got 5 more added in.

It has paid itself off already which is good, so I have recovered the cost. I am glad I got in when I did.

Now the extra payment is helping with the mortgage. :D

Had a client recently who had a power system by redback technologies who reckoned the whole package worked out economically for them.

 

I think he got the panels inverter and battery system all installed at the same time.
