Thanks! Main problem was that there was a noggin between where my cables went in behind the monitor and out below the desk.

Cut out a chunk of plasterboard, drilled through the timber, dropped the cables in, patched it up. Then it turns out one end of my HDMI cable was toast. Might test first next time...

Yeah Home Mini. Came free with my phone. Mainly just use it as a speaker, but has got me using Google Assistant on my phone more.
