He uses an xbox one and and we have a windows 10 intel nuc which apparently can support it.

I don't think it'll work with the xbox (not sure)

What is he looking to use it for?

We use a nuc 8i7hvk as a media hub. Apparently it has a Radeon graphics card and 32gb memory. Iam beginning to think he specced it for gaming.....

He plays fortnite, halo, minecraft etc. Also claims he can use the VR for educational purposes....

Should work fine for those games. The gpu that comes with that pc is similar to a gtx1050 so it's no ball tearer but it will play a variety of games well at 1080p.

Lol at using it for educational purposes. I mean you could technically use it for work or study...

I don't have any first hand experience with them but I can provide a link or two for you to have a look.

What's good?!

A cheap option. $300

A more expensive option. $600

An even more expensive option. $900ish

A very expensive option. Pc case gear.

MSY parts list. Ctrl f and search virtual to find the headsets.

Yootoob search for virtual headset. Be wary of paid advertising!!!

You can get a template and an app for phones to make a cardboard headset (google cardboard and I think one other) but that probably would not be a very good present. It'd still be a cool little project though and good for watching movies in bed on the phone if that is your thing.

So yeah, nothing real exciting here but it saves a click or two I suppose.

Ooops

You may need to check with the youngone to make sure it's VR and not MR he's after.

The rift is a virtual reality headset. - Everything is created inside the headset

Mixed reality is more along the lines of the failed?? google glass idea - you still see the outside world with the headset placing a "computer screen" overlay on top of it (as well as the inside only view on some units I think???)

Steam has an app that you can run on the PC that will let you know if the NUC will be able to support it. Running that on the NUC would be a good start.
