that's what happens when you just get any builder to build your house. Builders are like tuners, you need one you can trust.

The inspector said he's never seen a single house that was done well, by any level of builder.  I found that surprising but I don't know his true "sample size" (30 years on the job though) and common demographic - inspecting mostly entry to mid level builders I would imagine you'd always find things wrong, since it would only take one tradie out of the whole parade to cause a stuff up.  The supervisor is supposed to pick that up of course!

My folks built with a higher end niche type builder, as they specialised in small block and complex builds. They were still sh*thouse, so many things not up to scratch or just plain wrong.

This makes me think the inspection might have a bit of holier than thou going and probably couldn't work as a builder (or in whatever trade).

 

Plenty of "can't do so will get a job critiquing others work" type roles out there.  But either way at least he's spotted the issues.

Steve the inspector is right  - there's plenty of very high quality homes out there but literally the builder only needs one tradesperson to let them down and their reputation suffers.
